What is answer engine optimization (AEO) for a B2B company?

TL;DR
Answer engine optimization is publishing real answers to the real questions your customers ask, so that when a buyer asks ChatGPT, Claude or Perplexity who can help, the assistant has something true and specific to work with. PitchKitchen founder Greg Rosner described it to Demand Gen Report in October 2026 this way: who is this for, why choose this approach, what does implementation involve, what can you prove. Fifty good FAQ answers can cover a lot of ground. Fifty versions of "we deliver innovative solutions" give the buyer very little. The number isn't the point. The substance is.
The short answer

Why it's different from SEO
SEO optimized a page for keywords and links so a search engine would rank it. AEO gives an assistant a reason to cite you inside an answer. The buyer's first move is a conversation, not a search: they describe their problem in plain language and ask who can solve it. Stop assuming the buyer meets you on your website. They may meet you in a conversation you're not in. Your job is to make sure that conversation has your true story to draw on.
What AEO is not
It is not sprinkling "AI-powered" over old copy. It is not a new CMS. And it is not a countdown. PitchKitchen's scan of 32,574 B2B domains found that 5,022 of the 20,496 homepages with a visible copyright year still said 2025 or earlier, which tells you how many companies have let their most authoritative page go quiet. It does not tell you what any engine says about them. Greg is explicit about that distinction, because an AEO program built on invented statistics is just the old marketing with a new label.
How to do it
Start with the questions your sales team hears every week. The early questions, when a buyer is trying to understand the problem. The comparison questions. The "why should we choose you" questions. Write them down. Then publish a useful answer to each, with evidence behind it, on a page an engine can read: plain language, answer first, FAQ schema, the company and the people named early. Every answer should come from the company's agreed story, its verbal identity, so fifty pages say one thing instead of fifty things.
How to measure it
You can't put a lost deal in a spreadsheet if you never knew it existed. But you can look for the gaps. Tools like Peec AI sample how a brand appears in answers to selected questions, which pages get cited and where competitors are supplying the information. Read the answers. If your company solves the problem but your website barely explains how, you've found work worth doing. Publish, put evidence behind it, and watch what changes. Then connect what you learn to qualified inquiries, sales conversations and a very ordinary question to the buyer: "How did you find us?" You won't see everything. You'll see more than you would by staring at website traffic alone.
Who should own it
The person who owns the story. AEO without an agreed verbal identity automates confusion. At PitchKitchen the sequence is: extract the truth with leadership, document it in the Magnetic Messaging Framework, make it available to every AI tool through an AI Brand Twin, then publish answers from it through a workflow authorized people can run. Work with us or build it yourselves. But create the story first.
FAQ
Is AEO the same as GEO (generative engine optimization)?
Different labels for the same aim: being cited inside AI-generated answers. The work is the same: substantive answers, evidence, a consistent story, pages engines can read.
How many pages do we need?
As many real questions as your buyers ask. Fifty good answers beat five hundred thin ones.
Can we measure AEO without a tool?
Yes, crudely. Ask the assistants your buyers use the ten questions you care about, three times each, and record who gets named and which pages get cited. Repeat monthly.
